The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA), Government of India, is running a scheme “Tracing the Roots” to help people of Indian origin who emigrated to their new homes decades or may be century ago to ascertain their roots in India - area and family to which their ancestors belong.
Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) who intend to trace their roots in India may apply in the prescribed Form to MOIA either directly or through the High Commission in Pretoria/Consulates General of India in Cape Town, Durban or Johannesburg. Application Form for this purpose is available on the website of the MOIA, i.e. www.moia.gov.in. (direct link: http://moia.gov.in/services.aspx?ID1=314&id=m7&idp=333&mainid=23 )
PIOs desirous of tracing their roots in India would be required to fill up the prescribed application form and deposit it along with a fee of Rs.30,000 ( Rupees Thirty Thousand only) in equivalent Rands/US Dollars. In case the attempt is not successful, a refund equivalent to Rs.20,000/- will be made to the applicant. Presently M/s Alankit Assignment (Singapore) Pvt. Ltd.(email: firstname.lastname@example.org) is the agency entrusted with tracing roots of PIOs in India.
